Thank you for your interest in joining the Gee-Gees Dance Team for the 25/26 season! Below, you will find all the information regarding our upcoming auditions. We are thrilled to welcome both incoming students and returning dancers to our team.

WELCOME ROOKIES!

We are thrilled you are considering auditioning for the Gee-Gees Dance Team!

Below is an outline of how our auditions are structured and what will be required of you at each round. There are multiple rounds to our audition process, so please be sure to read each section thoroughly. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out!

round 1

What?

Submit a video which best represents your dancing abilities, preferably in contemporary, lyrical or jazz. This should be a recent competition or rehearsal video of your solo, duet*, or trio*.

*If submitting a duet or trio, please indicate which dancer you are.

Where?

Virtual! Submissions are to be sent to geegeesdance@gmail.com with the following subject line: VIDEO AUDITION your FIRST and LAST name
(i.e. VIDEO AUDITION SARA SMITH) In your submission email, please include the following:

● Full name
● Program and year of study
● Phone number and email (can be either school email or personal email—whichever you wish to be contacted at)

When?

The deadline to submit your video audition is Monday, August 25th, 2025, by 11:59 pm EST.

Additional Information

After the first round of auditions, dancers will receive an email from the Captains informing them whether they have been selected to move on to the second round or not.

After the first round of auditions, dancers will receive an email from the Captains and Assistant Captains informing them whether they have been selected to move onto the second round or not. Keep an eye out!

What?

If selected from the first round of auditions, dancers will be asked to attend an in-person audition.

You will be evaluated individually on your technique, dance capabilities (including jumps, turns, and kicks), and overall style. Your ability to pick up choreography and dance cohesively with others will also be considered. This round will include a technique portion, a combination (in either jazz or contemporary), and an improvisation section.

Where?

In-person—Montpetit Gym. The gym is located on the University of Ottawa campus on the bottom floor of Montpetit Hall.Dance Team representatives will be at the main entrance of Montpetit to check in.

When?

Round 2 rookie auditions will take place on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 pm in Montpetit Gym 3.

Additional Benefits

If selected from round 2, dancers will be asked to attend a secondary in-person audition with returning vets from the previous season of the Gee-Gees Dance Team.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a $15 audition fee for Round 2. Please bring cash.

round 3

What?

If successful from the in-person auditions, dancers will be asked to attend a final in-person audition with returning members of the team.
This audition will consist solely of a combination in jazz, contemporary, or lyrical. You will be evaluated on your ability to pick up choreography and dance cohesively with returning members of the team.

Where?

In-person—Montpetit Gym. The gym is located on the University of Ottawa campus on the bottom floor of Montpetit Hall.
Dance Team representatives will be at the main entrance of Montpetit to check in.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a $5 audition fee for Round 3. Please bring cash.

When?

Round 3 final auditions will take place on Sunday, September 7th, 2025, from 7:00-9:00 pm in Montpetit Gym 3.

You will be evaluated individually on your technique, dance capabilities (i.e. jumps/turns/kicks), and stylistic elements. You will also be evaluated on your ability to pick up choreography and cohesion with the other dancers.

In-person—Montpetit Gym. The gym is located on the University of Ottawa campus on the bottom floor of Montpetit Hall.

When?

Auditions will take place on Sunday, September 7th, 2025, from 7:00-9:00 pm in Montpetit Gym 3.

For our incoming dancers, we hope that the information below might provide you with a clearer picture of how the team operates.

If you have any further questions, we'd be happy to answer them! Please don't hesitate to contact us here.

1. What styles of dance does the team do?

We primarily compete in styles including Jazz, Contemporary, and Lyrical. Depending on the interests of the team, however, this may change from year to year. We often compete in additional styles including Tap, Hip-Hop, and Open.

We encourage all of our dancers to express themselves in the styles they are most confident in, and provide dancers with the opportunity to choreograph routines in any style they might choose.

2. What skills do I need to be on the team?

The Gee-Gees Dance Team is a university level competitive team, so it is preferred that incoming dancers possess some form of past competitive dance experience and/or studio training.

We value a dancer's technical skills as much as their movement quality; what we look for most in the audition process is the dancer's ability to blend seamlessly with other members of the team. Technique does not automatically guarantee you a spot!

3. How often does the team rehearse?

The team dedicates most rehearsals to polishing routines in preparation for competition. Dancers may rehearse anywhere from 2-7 hours a week, depending on how many routines they choose to be in. Extra rehearsal time may be added throughout the year to prepare for outside events (e.g. Capital Hoops).

Along with competitive rehearsals, the team will occasionally hold technique or conditioning classes and combo classes to maintain strength, flexibility, and style.

4. Where are rehearsals held?

Rehearsals are most often held on the uOttawa campus. Common locations include Montpetit Gym, Minto Sports Complex, and UCU Terminus. For groups of smaller sizes or routines requiring special accommodations (i.e. Tap routines), dancers may be asked to travel to a local studio. To make this commute easier, we promote carpooling for those who live in similar areas.

5. Who choreographs the team's routines?

Our team is entirely student-run, so the majority of our choreography originates from our own dancers. Depending on yearly interest, we may invite outside choreographers in to create original pieces for the team.

6. Where and when are competitions held?

The team competes in 2-3 competitions per year. There are currently a small handful of dance competitions that run varsity level events, and these events are usually held in locations throughout Southern Ontario.

Depending on the location of the competition, dancers may be required to travel anywhere from 3–6 hours to cities outside of Ottawa via bus. Competitions are typically held during consecutive weekends in March and often run from Thursday to Sunday, during which the team will stay together overnight.
